VISUAL EFFECTS
for NEW LIFE (2024)

This feature length film is genre-bending at its finest. Part suspense, part mystery, part zombie apocalypse, this movie keeps you guessing the whole, white knuckle ride.

DIRECTOR: John Rosman

9iFX was excited to help out with John Rosman’s directorial debut, New Life, by providing top notch Visual Effects. The film has won several awards in the Film Festival circuit and hit the top 10 new horror movies list on AppleTV, and Amazon Prime. It ranked #6 on Forbes’ list of top horror films for 2024, and got a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

CONCEPT

New Life’s subtle approach to horror and suspense meant that the effects needed to blend seamlessly into the background. The goal was to make the viewer watch the film and then ask, “What VFX?” We always say that a good effect is an invisible one, and New Life is a great example of how subtle effects can be used to enhance the impact of storytelling in filmmaking, without taking over.

PROCESS

Using 2D compositing techniques, we worked with Director John Rosman create subtle, yet affective VFX to tell the story. We enhanced the gore factor during key scenes, creating those gut punching jump scares that every good thriller needs. We added in muzzle flashes and blood sprays, changed addresses and license plates, and replaced every screen seen in the film.

CONCLUSION

The final result is a full length feature film that blends horror, with suspense, while slowly unraveling the mystery behind the protagonist’s flight. Released on the heels of the end of the global pandemic, the characters are real, and the story packs an unexpectedly emotional punch. We’re proud of the work we completed for this movie, filmed 100% in Oregon.
